Beware the FREE Website.

This article has a lot in common with "Why you shouldn't get your sister-in-law's kid to build the website for your business".

With so many new, sometimes revolutionary, practices emerging from the Internet it is hard to distinguish between bargains and rip-off's. The Internet turns many a traditional business practice on its head, so why not get your website built for free?

Beware the FREE Website.

Consider someone offering to do your business cards or brochures for free. You might be vaguely interested, but more likely, your scepticism would far outweigh your curiosity. Getting your website hosted for free might sound enticing but you should approach it with scepticism. The law of human nature should make you ask "what is in it for them?". Usually the company hosting your website likes to plaster (not small) advertisements on every page of your website. Even if it didn’t slow your website down, just the fact that you have totally unrelated advertisements all over your website should be enough to deter you. But worst of all, people will get the feeling that your business can’t afford the relatively inexpensive cost of having your own website.

If a printer offered you this deal … "We’ll do your business cards at half price, but you have to have our company logo and contact details on top of yours" … would you go for it ?

There are a few companies who offer free websites without advertising banners.   However, you normally have to have an address off their web address.  For example, "www.your_name.their_name.com" or "www.their_name.com.au/your_name".  Again, you are telling the world your business can't afford a few hundred dollars for your own domain name.

If we haven’t convinced you to avoid free websites, here’s how most people find those free web hosting companies.

A much better alternative, in our humble opinion, is Website in a Day.
